Nature vs. nurture is one of man's oldest debates.  Is our behavior and thus, current success level in life determined by our DNA or the environment that surrounds and supports us?  Most of the time, the answer is a little bit of both.  But regardless of nature, we do know that the environment and way we perceive our environment is proven to impact on our mental health in both positive and negative ways.  

While I was working on my Master's in social work at ASU, we performed Bio-Psycho-Social assessments for individuals with a basic PIE chart.  PIE stands for Person (biology) In (psychology) Environment (sociology).  The thing that always struck me is that all of these things work together to create harmony.  When one element is out of whack, it not only disrupts the harmony of the whole, but can actually impact the the well being of the other elements.  

In life, I have learned to be strategic about the company I keep, because the company I keep will ultimately determine the company I don't keep.  Gardens never grow without sunlight and water just as toxic environments will not nourish the soul.  Be aware of the company you keep and what you allow to nurture your soul.  Seek "sunshine and water."

Are You Good Company?

What do you bring to your companions?  Love?  Honesty?  Compassion?  Respect?  Commitment?  Do you both seek sunshine and water and bring it to others?  What can you do to be good company?

PRACTICE

1. WARM UP

Start with "warm-up" stretches or series to awaken the body.

2. PRACTICE FLOW SEQUENCE

  • Complete the right side (as shown below), start to finish.  You will end up at the front of your mat.  
  • Complete the left side and end at the front of your mat.
  • Repeat 1-3 times (repeat same sequence or advance postures).

3. COOL DOWN

End with a cool down sequence.
